Elon Musk Officially Unveils xAI's Most Powerful Multimodal Model, "Grok 4.0"

xAI, the AI company founded by Elon Musk, has officially released "Grok 4.0," the newest model in its "Grok" chatbot series, announced via livestream on X (formerly Twitter). xAI's team called it "our most powerful and advanced AI yet." Pricing: the standard Grok 4.0 plan costs $30/month, while "Grok 4 Heavy" costs $300/month. The earlier "Grok 3.0" model remains free.

xAI had been expected to release Grok 3.5 before moving to 4.0, but it skipped that step and launched Grok 4.0 directly — a bold move reflecting Musk's push to "leap ahead of rivals."

Grok 4.0 is an advanced multimodal AI handling text, images, and video. xAI says it offers faster reasoning and a much-improved, more intuitive interface than its predecessor.

Notably, its "DeepSearch" feature lets Grok 4.0 pull the latest data from across the internet, including X, in real time — delivering information instantly during conversation without switching apps.

Grok 4.0 is also praised for understanding internet memes, slang, and jokes — a "trend-savvy AI assistant" that stands out from rivals.

Alongside the general Grok 4.0 release, xAI also unveiled "Grok 4 Code" for developers, offering code generation, debugging, and code explanation on par with GitHub Copilot and GPT-4 Code Interpreter — a solution aimed at "power users" like software engineers. With such capabilities, the Grok 4 series appeals to users wanting real-time performance and personalized AI. The release also pressures OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google to launch their next models, intensifying competition across the AI industry.

OPENAI

OpenAI May Soon Launch an AI-Powered Browser, Set to Reshape How We Use the Web

OpenAI reportedly plans to launch its own AI-integrated browser within weeks, shifting interaction from clicks to chat. ChatGPT already serves over 500 million weekly users worldwide; if they migrate to the new browser, it could hit Google's ad ecosystem hard, since Chrome powers much of Alphabet's targeted-ad and search-traffic revenue.

(As noted, ChatGPT already has over 500 million weekly users — a potential shift that could hurt Google's ad business.) The browser reportedly embeds AI agents to automate tasks like bookings and form-filling — part of OpenAI's push to bring "AI into everyday life and work." Built on "Chromium," the project has brought on two former Google VPs who led Chrome's early development, back in 2023. Google Chrome holds over 70% of global market share with more than 3 billion users; Safari trails around 16%. US startup Perplexity launched its AI browser "Comet" on July 9, 2024, designed to handle tasks on users' behalf as part of its next-gen AI search vision. Founded in August 2022, Perplexity focuses on AI-powered search. Comet integrates with apps like Slack and handles complex voice or text questions. The company said it will keep improving Comet's features and UX based on user feedback, aiming for accurate, trustworthy AI. The Browser Company and Brave have also launched similar AI browsers with automatic browsing and summarization — signaling fiercer competition ahead.

CLAUDE

Anthropic Expands Claude into Education, Evolving It into an AI Tool That Supports Student Learning

Anthropic is expanding its Claude AI into education, partnering with universities to add learning-support features.

New Updates for Claude!

New features in development will let students access lecture materials, textbooks, diagrams, and recordings directly in chat, via integrations with tools like Wiley and Panopto.

Claude also integrates with Canvas for daily coursework. Anthropic says all Claude conversations stay private and are not used for AI training. Claude is already used in education: a San Francisco law school uses it to help students analyze legal arguments, while Northumbria University (UK) has built it into coursework to meet digital-native learning needs and improve quality and equity. AI in education could narrow learning gaps, but this requires ethics, privacy, and equitable access alongside the technology. Anthropic aims to build a better educational environment for everyone through such responsible efforts.
