Microsoft further strengthens its AI ecosystem: rival AI models beyond OpenAI now run on Azure, plus a new "AI coding agent"

On May 19, 2025, at"Microsoft Build," the company's annual developer event in Seattle, USA, Microsoft unveiled several new AI strategies: bringingAI models from vendors other than OpenAI onto Azure, and releasing a new dev tool,"GitHub Copilot Agent".

Expanding the ecosystem: from exclusive to multi-vendor

Microsoft will now officially supportAI models from various providers — includingxAI (Elon Musk), Meta (LLaMA), France's Mistral, and Germany's Black Forest Labs — running in its ownAzure data centers, bringingthe total number of AI models on Azure to over 1,900.This reflects Microsoft's shift towarda more neutral, open AI platform, rather than relying solely on its deep OpenAI partnership.Microsoft CEOSatya Nadella said:"Being able to flexibly draw on a variety of AI models unlocks a level of creativity developers and enterprises haven't had before."Running these modelson Microsoft's own infrastructure also boosts availability and stability — critical at a time when surging access frequently causes AI service outages.

Microsoft also unveiled a new GitHub Copilot feature,"AI Coding Agent." Unlike ordinary code-completion tools, it's an agent thattakes a programmer's requirements and has AI generate, run, and verify the code end to end.The workflow: ・Receives the developer's instructions ・Auto-generates code and runs the task ・Shows the result for confirmationMicrosoft frames this as the first step towardfully automating software development, and says a coming service,Azure Foundry, will let companies buildtheir own AI agents.

What about the OpenAI relationship?

The announcement camejust a week after OpenAI unveiled its next-gen coding tool, "Codex," drawing industry attention to the relationship between the two companies. The OpenAI partnership remains in place, but Microsoft made clear it will nowdeepen ties with more AI developers, giving customers more flexible options — also expected to help optimize costs.

APPLE

Apple to open its own AI models to developers — aiming for a leading position in generative AI

According to a Bloomberg News report dated May 20, 2025, Apple ismoving forward with plans to let external developers access its own AI models, a shift toward serious AI competition for a long-cautious Apple, meant to spur developers to build new features and apps on its own large language model (LLM).

Apple is preparing a dedicated SDK and frameworks to integrate its AI into third-party apps. The initial phase will focus on lightweight, on-device models, with cloud-based, higher-power models opening up later. The target is the AI feature set known as"Apple Intelligence," which covers email rewriting, notification summaries, and automatic photo touch-ups. Until now, developers could only reach these via APIs or existing libraries — not access the underlying models directly to tune or customize.Bloomberg reports Apple is expected to officially unveil this at its annualWorldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), set forJune 9, 2025. If it happens, it would be a historic first — Apple opening its own AI foundation technology to the outside world. This is seen as strengthening "Apple Intelligence" while helping Apple compete as Google, Microsoft, and Samsung race to add AI to their products. Some watchers say Apple has lagged in AI and view this as a bid to close the gap.Apple has not issued an official comment.

On May 21, 2025, Shopify officially announced its latest AI feature,"AI Store Builder." Vanessa Lee, Shopify's VP of Product, said:"Until now, merchants had to drag and drop parts and type in content piece by piece — a slow process. With a more flexible input format, we let AI produce the optimal store design automatically."Shopify plans to expand AI features such as image generation and inventory management, using stronger AI to attract more sellers to its platform.
