[2023 Update] What Is the .NET Framework? Meaning and Advantages Explained

【2023年最新版】.NET FRAMEWORKの意味や長所を解説!

The .NET Framework offers programmers multiple advantages compared to what other platforms provide. Microsoft has built numerous modern application development technologies, as well as existing ones, into the .NET Framework. These technologies are highly efficient not just for today's business applications, but for future ones too.

In this article, we'll walk through the basics of .NET in an easy-to-understand way.

1. What is the .NET Framework

1.1. What is the .NET Framework

The .NET Framework was the earliest iteration of .NET. Released in 2002, it ran only on Microsoft Windows, for building Windows applications.

Microsoft designed the .NET Framework for programming Windows applications on Windows devices. It has since been superseded by services such as Microsoft's K2.

.NET also wasn't originally open source — it was a proprietary solution. Microsoft has since opened up many of its platforms by adopting more open-source practices. The version of the .NET Framework released in 2019 was the last proprietary version of .NET.

1.2. Components of the .NET Framework

The .NET Framework has the following components.

① .NET Class Library

The .NET Framework includes multiple classes developers can easily use. Classes within the FCL (Framework Class Library) are grouped under multiple namespaces.

② Common Language Runtime

It provides a common environment for running code written in different languages, such as C#, VB, and Visual C++, enabling interoperability between languages.

③ Dynamic Language Runtime

The DLR adds special services to the CLR, allowing dynamic languages to run on the .NET Framework.

④ Application Domains

Used to isolate the processing of different applications, and can be defined within the .NET Framework.

⑤ .NET Framework Security

The .NET Framework provides multiple tools developers can use to protect resources and code from unauthorized users.

⑥ Cross-Language Interoperability

Objects or compiled code from one language can be used in another .NET-compatible language.

⑦ Side-by-Side Execution

Multiple versions of the CLR can run at the same time within the same application.

⑧ Common Type System

The CTS is used to maintain data integrity between code written in different .NET-compatible languages. It also helps prevent data loss when transferring data from a type in one language to an equivalent type in another.

2. From the .NET Framework to the .NET platform

Microsoft launched the .NET project in 2002. From the start, .NET's goal was to build a universal platform that could be programmed in any language. As a first step, Windows was .NET's main target.

However, Microsoft submitted the .NET runtime infrastructure and the C# language specification to ECMA for standardization. This led to porting projects for other platforms — specifically Linux, embedded systems, mobile devices, and browsers.

2.1. .NET Framework

The .NET Framework is the earliest version of .NET. It gives developers a set of APIs covering the most common programming needs, interacts with the underlying operating system, and runs only on Windows.

However, its lifecycle is now coming to an end following the release of .NET 5.

2.2. Mono

The Mono project brings .NET to Linux machines. It's the best-known porting project based on the .NET standard specification. Mono's goal is to let Linux applications built for the .NET Framework run — and vice versa.

However, compatibility isn't always guaranteed, for several reasons. Since some .NET Framework features are tied to the Windows operating system, Mono's implementation often lags behind the latest .NET Framework features.

2.3. .NET Core

.NET Core is a complete rewrite of the .NET Framework built with a cross-platform goal in mind.

Its redesigned architecture defines a minimal set of features common across Windows, Linux, and Mac. The remaining features can be downloaded as library packages.

2.4. .NET Standard

.NET Standard isn't a separate .NET implementation — it's a formal specification of .NET APIs that helps developers build cross-platform libraries.

As long as a platform supports a given .NET Standard version, a library targeting that same version will run on it, regardless of device type or framework implementation (.NET Framework, Mono, .NET Core).

3. .NET Framework languages

3.1. C++

Many programmers already know C++, so it's easier for them to carry that knowledge into the .NET environment than to learn a brand-new language. C++ is one of the most popular languages in the world.

3.2. C#

C# sits between Java and C++, and is rapidly becoming the most popular language within Microsoft's ecosystem (while avoiding many of the pain points of Java and C++). C# development is popular across the board, from IoT programming to mobile application development.

3.3. ASP.NET

A web framework designed and developed by Microsoft in January 2002. It integrates HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, and is used to build websites, web applications, and web services. Built on the Common Language Runtime (CLR), it lets programmers write code in any supported .NET language.

3.4. JScript .NET

JScript .NET, a compiled version of the JScript language, is a good choice if you want to write code quickly and easily.

4. Advantages of the .NET Framework

The term ".NET" has been used to refer to a universal development platform. However, many implementations have since emerged, making the ".NET" name somewhat ambiguous.

.NET 5 replaces the existing implementations — the .NET Framework, .NET Core, and even Mono — aiming to embody the original vision of a universal development platform.

In other words, from .NET 5 onward, there is only ".NET" — both as a name and as a platform.

4.1 An object-oriented software development model

.NET is based on object-oriented programming (OOP). OOP is a development model that breaks software down into small, manageable, combinable pieces.

In OOP, data is divided into objects — data fields — and a class declaration describes an object's behavior and content.

This modular structure lets you define an object's behavior and its interactions without having to manage its internal attributes.

OOP simplifies programming by making code easier to manage, easier to test, and better suited to handling recurring problems.

It also eliminates unnecessary programming and generally reduces the amount of code developers have to write. .NET enables code and component reuse, saving time and reducing development costs.

4.2 A reliable, simple caching system

Caching means temporarily storing data so it can be retrieved quickly when needed. Otherwise, retrieving stored data — whether it's the result of an earlier information request or a duplicate stored somewhere else — can take time.

.NET's caching system is robust and easy to use, and is designed to scale well. The Object Cache class lets developers build custom caching implementations to improve the performance and scalability of Windows client and server applications.

4.3 Flexible deployment and easy maintenance

One of .NET Core's key features is flexible deployment. It can be installed as part of an application, or it may need to be installed separately. The modular design assumes all necessary dependencies are included, so deployment is as simple as copying a folder.

Another advantage is that you can run multiple .NET Core versions side by side on the same machine, covering different projects and handling deployment tasks seamlessly.

5. Summary

Microsoft refined this web technology and built it into the .NET Framework, achieving a technically revolutionary leap forward.

In this article, we gave an overview of what the .NET Framework is and its advantages. As Microsoft's support deadlines approach, the need for DX transformation, adding features to existing systems, and system upgrades keeps growing.
