3 Steps You Must Know Before Adopting Offshore Development

Step 2: Find an offshore company through a reliable channel

Once you know what matters most, the next question is: "How do I find a highly reliable offshore company?" To answer that, first find a reliable channel.

2.1. Attend the Japan IT Week exhibition

Japan IT Week is held twice a year in Tokyo, in May and October (the 5th and 10th months). You can connect not only with offshore companies from Vietnam but also with offshore companies from other countries.

At the exhibition, you can get to know each company better, and there are plenty of options to choose from.

2.2. Search the VINASA list (for Vietnamese offshore companies)

The Vietnam Software and IT Services Association (VINASA) is a non-profit NGO representing Vietnam's software services industry. To join VINASA, a company must pass a rigorous certification process with a strong track record and high expertise.

Three times a year, VINASA certifies and awards the Sao Khue Award to companies with excellent track records and high expertise.

2.3. Search online and reach out via a contact form

This is the most common approach. However, since there's so much information online, filtering through it can be quite complex.

Step 3: Reach out and make an inquiry

Once you've chosen an offshore company, move on to these steps:

• Step 1: Save the company's capability profile and reach out via their contact info.
• Step 2: Set up an in-person meeting to understand the offshore company better.
• Step 3: Share your requirements to see how they work, gauging their level and growth potential.

Points to keep in mind when choosing an offshore company:

• Check the founder's background. Have they worked in Japan? Do they understand Japanese culture?
• Do they have an office in Japan? (If so, discussions become easier.)
• Who are their main clients? Long-term partnerships? Have those clients grown?
• What's their growth rate? Were they hit by the pandemic? This shows the offshore company's growth potential.

*** The single most important thing for an offshore company is its people. Low growth potential means losing top talent, which directly hurts the company's growth.
