Netlify vs. AWS Amplify: A Thorough Comparison of 50 Features

NetlifyとAWS amplify : 50の機能を徹底比較

We've previously published two articles, "Comparing AWS Amplify and Firebase" and "Comparing AWS Amplify and Vercel." This time, we'd like to compare Netlify and AWS Amplify. Let's look at the strengths and weaknesses of each service, along with a comparison table covering 50 features.

Finally, if you still haven't decided which service to use, we'll help you choose between the two.

1. What Is Netlify? What Are Its Features?

Netlify launched in 2015 to help solve the complexity of building on AWS. Simply push to a git repository, and it automatically builds your static website or web app, optimizes the files, deploys them to a global CDN, and scales to spec.

Netlify lets you set up automation without any DevOps knowledge. Every git push triggers a fast, fully automated build-test-deploy-scale cycle. It's not an exaggeration to call it one-click CI/CD for busy developers!

Today, Netlify serves over 2,500,000 developers and companies worldwide. It solves all of these problems to help speed up development and service launches.

2. Drawbacks of Netlify

Netlify only automates the deployment of serverless static websites and static web apps. This limitation has both pros and cons. Static sites are secure and load quickly in the browser. However, static sites lack the real-time user interaction that many website users want.

To partly overcome this limitation, Netlify offers a separate headless CMS. Netlify CMS lets you edit data, store that content in a git repository, make the data reproducible, and distribute it automatically along with each build.

Some people would rather not store content in git. GitHub also imposes data size limits.

3. What Is AWS Amplify? What Are Its Features?

Following Netlify's 2015 release, AWS Amplify launched in 2028.

AWS Amplify offers automated, full-stack web and mobile app development and deployment through a one-click style similar to Netlify's (build, test, and deploy). Apart from its build and deployment services, it also offers static web hosting.

AWS Amplify suits front-end developers who want to deploy full-stack apps to AWS infrastructure. You can build the back end using a drag-and-drop visual interface. Back-end services include authentication, data, and storage.

Just like Netlify, pushing to a git (or AWS CodeDeploy) repository triggers a full deployment right away, without the limitations of static websites or static web apps. AWS Amplify also handles mobile apps. You can add a one-click deploy button to your repository or HTML web page.

A convenient feature of Amplify is that it gives your app access to every AWS service as needed. Along with all of AWS's features and security, you get automatic deployment to a global CDN.

4. Drawbacks of AWS Amplify

AWS Amplify's build/deploy service and its static web hosting are billed as separate services. This can be convenient in some cases, but it adds complexity to managing costs. Since Amplify is a managed service, it costs a bit more than configuring things yourself on AWS. Like Netlify, Amplify charges for that convenience.

AWS Amplify doesn't let you use a load balancer to distribute traffic. That can be a dealbreaker in certain situations.

6. Netlify or AWS Amplify: Which Should You Choose?

Both Netlify and AWS Amplify support a fairly wide range of developer workflows.

If you need a visual approach to building a full-stack website or app, AWS Amplify is the better choice. Amplify also supports mobile app deployment, which Netlify doesn't. With just a few clicks, you get full access to every AWS infrastructure service as needed.

Netlify is well suited to static sites and static apps that prioritize a fast, one-click build-test-deploy cycle. There's no server, no DevOps, and no hassle — and Netlify CMS handles data storage and user interaction. Push to git, and deployment follows right away, so it's very fast.
